Pumpkin Powerhouse: Orange Is the New . . . Skin Care Sensation
Ever since I first watched wide-eyed as Cinderella was whisked away to the ball in her carriage, I’ve thought that pumpkins were magical. On Sunday drives, when my Mother would take us down rural roads to delight in the majestic kaleidoscope of autumn leaves, we’d pass endless fields of pumpkin patches that I was sure were waiting for the Great Pumpkin. Jack-o’-lanterns glowing with their silly grins or scary grimaces, the unmistakable aroma of Thanksgiving pies, right up to those more grown-up pleasures of pumpkin latte and pumpkin wine in pumpkin glasses—every year, the pumpkin harvest brings with it happy times, past and present.
Now, pumpkin is a part of my daily beauty routine, and my skin has never looked better. We’ve known about the benefits of eating pumpkin, all those antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), minerals and vitamins helping to stave off heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure; keeping our muscles and eyes in tiptop shape and our skin soothed and healthy. The pumpkin is an orange fountain of youth!
Imagine how much more the pumpkin can do for your skin when applied topically. One advantage is its small molecular structure that allows all those skin-loving nutrients to easily penetrate the skin and get right to work.
Vitamins A and C are antioxidant rock stars. They soften the skin, create a defense system against free radicals and stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that keeps skin strong, toned and supple and increases cell regeneration. Our bodies produce less as we age, so whatever will get the collagen going is a good thing.
AHAs, including glycolic acid, also stimulate the production of collagen and keep the skin moisturized so that it is soft and firm. They are natural exfoliators, dissolve dry/dead cells, clear them off the surface of the skin for a clean and radiant countenance.
Carotenoids (the source of the pumpkin’s brilliant orange color) are protective antioxidants that slow down cellular aging and smooth away those dreaded wrinkles. Perhaps most valuable is their ability to repair the damage that overexposure to the sun has wrought on our skin.
Potassium and zinc are two of the many minerals in pumpkins. We associate bananas with potassium, but pumpkins have a higher concentration of it. Potassium keeps skin cells hydrated by drawing water molecules from the environment and protects the skin’s natural moisture from evaporating. By keeping that balance, skin cell growth is enhanced and blemishes and scars fade all that more quickly. Zinc is a powerful weapon against acne. It breaks down the built-up oil, dead skin cells and debris that are lodged in the pores and result in whiteheads, blackheads and an overall outbreak of acne. It also helps to curtail the oil glands from overproducing and step up skin renewal. Acne is both prevented and relieved.
The outer layer of the skin (epidermis) is a barrier that seals in natural moisture and nutrients and provides protection from toxins and environmental debris permeating the skin. Vitamin E and the essential fatty acids in pumpkins keep the epidermis healthy so it can do its job. They also contribute to keeping the oil glands from overproducing.
