Whether you like it or not, fall is here. While for me, I couldn’t be more excited for cooler weather, pumpkin spice season, and sweaters, need I say more? MY FAVE! But, I do know that with the weather change, my skin also changes in fall. Along comes the need to also change my skincare routine.

I have learned that my skin needs a routine change-up when it comes to the weather cooling off. Climates vary across the globe, but in the summer, we typically deal with increased time in the sun, higher humidity levels, and higher temperatures, while winter months often mean cooler weather, drier air, indoor heating, and exposure to elements like wind, snow, and rain.

Keep reading while we talk about how to restore balance to your skin as it changes in fall, and which MintPear products we recommend to help.

How to know WHEN to switch up your routine?

The transition from summer to fall can be hard to pinpoint when it comes to a calendar. At least where I live, it can be summer weather one day and the next I am pulling out all my scarves and warm sweaters and lighting my fall-scented candles. It can be even more confusing to know when to switch up your skincare routine officially for fall weather.

Here is a tip: In terms of transitioning your skincare regimen for fall, you should really pay attention to a decrease in humidity versus temperature. It’s this decrease in humidity that is why your skin changes in fall.

WHY change up your routine?

Now that we have talked about the when let’s make sure you understand the WHY in changing up your skincare game for fall. When temperatures drop, we see a dramatic decrease in humidity and is responsible for how your skin changes in fall. Also, there tends to be an increase in wind, rain, and snow, as well as an uptick in indoor heating, all of which can contribute to drier skin. And while my hair may not love the humidity, my skin surely does. When the humidity drops in fall, I definitely notice my skin to be drier and more prone to breakouts due to lack of moisture.

What should you change in your routine?

Think of the change as a simple one – you’re skin will not be getting as much moisture from the climate and weather, so you need to add some extra moisture back into your skincare routine. For summer you most likely have switched to a lightweight moisturizer for your skin. Now is the time, to reintroduce your thicker and creamier moisturizers – and possibly add in an overnight intensive moisturizing serum or cream as well. If your skin tends to breakout with heavier products and creams, the problem might actually be in the ingredients rather than the consistency. Make sure you’re using clean products with organic ingredients.

Don’t forget the SPF!

Yep, you read that right. Even in the fall and winter months, it is just as important to wear sunscreen daily. Rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, -32 or 110, sunscreen is an absolute must and should be priority #1. The only change you’ll need to make in summer versus fall is where you’re applying and how often. In the cooler months, you only need to apply sunscreen to exposed skin, which is generally a smaller area since you’re more covered up. Also, because you’re not sweating or swimming as much, you can switch to reapplying every three to four hours in the fall (versus every two in the summer).
