The Clean Skincare Revolution Has Begun

Before you grab any skincare product off the shelf or online, you might want to do some research. Although additional clean skincare brands are emerging on the market every year, many brands still offer products that contain potentially harmful ingredients.
If you are interested in switching to clean skincare products or aren’t entirely sure what you are using is safe, read on as we break down what to look for to optimize your health but still look fabulous.
What is Clean Skincare & Does Clean Skincare Matter?
As more and more people decide to take control of their health, the skincare products they use are also coming under scrutiny. Many people are ditching skincare products with harsh chemicals for products with more natural ingredients. Clean skincare is not only crucial for your health but the health of the environment as well.
Currently, Europe has banned over 1,000 harmful skincare ingredients compared to only 11 ingredients that are prohibited in the United States. The low number of banned ingredients in the U.S. is partially due to the FDA regulations being over 80 years old. This has caused many clean beauty proponents to begin pressuring the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to reevaluate its current stance on many ingredients in cosmetics and skincare products.
New research continues to emerge on the impact products containing harsh chemicals can build up and become toxic over time.
Harmful Skincare Ingredients to Avoid
It is imperative to note that since the FDA does not monitor who in the beauty industry is using the words clean and natural when describing their products, you must do a little research to identify if the “clean” skincare products are trustworthy. Therefore, we have put together a short list to help identify ingredients to avoid and the reasons below.
Sulfates
Sulfates are found in cleansers and detergents and are used as a cleaning agent. They can cause lung, skin, and eye irritation. In addition, sulfate 1,4-dioxane has been linked to causing cancer in laboratory animals.
Artificial Dyes
Although the pink hue of your favorite moisturizer might look pretty, it might also cause an increase in acne. This is because synthetic dyes clog pores and interfere with your body’s natural oil production.
Phthalates
If one of your skincare products says fragrance, you might want to step away. Phthalates are often used to make plastic more durable. However, in personal care products, they are used as a fragrance stabilizers.
Parabens
Parabens are a common preservative found in cosmetics and skincare products. The health concern for parabens focuses on the impact on the endocrine and reproductive systems. Parabens are common in shampoos, conditioners, and cleansers.
Hydroquinone
Found primarily in moisturizers, cleansers, and skin lighteners, Hydroquinone has been linked to some forms of cancer, respiratory tract irritation, and organ-system toxicity. As a result, this ingredient is restricted in the U.S. but banned in Europe.
Quaternium-15
Quaternium-15 is a formaldehyde-releasing antibacterial preservative that can be found in beauty products. This ingredient can cause irritation and allergic reactions. It is found in specific cleansers, soaps, and shampoos.
