Diminish Acne in 5 Steps: Anti-Acne Skincare Routine

Are you still fighting acne long past graduating from high school? If so, you are not alone. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne affects over 50 million people yearly in the United States. One way to help diminish acne is by incorporating a daily anti-acne skincare routine. Read on to learn what Master Esthetician and MintPear Co-Founder Rita Almusa recommends in her 5-step anti-acne skincare routine.
Anti-Acne Skincare Routine to Diminish Acne
Cleanse the Right Way
It can be tempting to overdo it when cleansing your acne-prone skin. Unfortunately, over-cleansing this type of skin causes your oil glands to work harder and, in return, actually increases breakouts. Rita shared, “I recommend cleansing your skin in the morning, before bed, and after a sweat session. Try a blotting sheet if you are feeling oily and are tempted to rewash your skin.”
Not only does the frequency of cleansing your face matter, but also what product you use to cleanse your skin. Focus on selecting a non-foaming cleanser, as sudsy cleansers can leave your skin feeling tight and dry. Cleanser ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid, AHA’s, and Salicylic acid are beneficial when combating acne. Not sure which cleanser to try? We recommend our Daily Clarifying Cleanser because the activated charcoal has been proven to treat acne and prevent blackheads.
Balance Your pH Levels
Another essential step in this daily skincare routine is adding a toner to your regimen. A toner not only deeply cleans pores but also works to balance the pH level of your skin. In a 2017 study, researchers found a correlation between higher skin pH levels and the presence of acne. Focus on finding a toner that includes ingredients such as Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera. Try MintPear’s FRESH Toner, which includes cucumber and Witch Hazel.
Concentrated Serums
Serums are formulated to repair and replenish skin. These highly concentrated skincare products are ideal for skin issues, including acne. “Focus on a serum that helps repair your skin, such as one that includes vitamin C. This powerful antioxidant not only helps stimulate collagen production but also helps to fade acne scars,” said Rita. She also shared, “My favorite serum for acne is our C Your Youth Vitamin C Serum. Remember to use it at night since vitamin C interacts with sunlight. Learn more about the Benefits of Vitamin C Serum.
Masks & Massage
A facial mask that assists with exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and grime that often clog pores. “I recommend using an exfoliating facial mask once or twice per week that contains natural ingredients such as my Pumpkin Enzyme Exfoliating Masque.” Since it isn’t recommended to use an exfoliating masque daily, in between masque days, use a facial roller to help ease the inflammation associated with acne. Facial rollers help stimulate the lymphatic system, remove toxins through lymphatic drainage, and help increase blood flow. Watch Rita as she demonstrates how to use a facial roller.
Moisturize
Don’t make the mistake of skipping this vital step for acne-prone skin. Finishing your skincare routine with a light moisturizer might feel counterintuitive, but it helps keep your skin hydrated and minimizes excessive oil production and flakey-looking skin.
Additional Acne Tips
Diet
Research is still out on the amount of impact our diet plays in the cause of acne. However, studies have shown that eating a diet that includes low glycemic foods in the form of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables in addition to lean proteins has diminishing acne.
Sun Protection
Excessive sun exposure causes the outer layer of skin to dry. Therefore, this triggers your body to respond by increasing oil production. Using sunscreen in addition to a hat and protective clothing can help to minimize your sun exposure and keep additional pimples at bay.
See Your Dermatologist
If you continue to struggle with acne, a checkup with your dermatologist is a fantastic way to establish a game plan to continue to feel comfortable in your skin.
The Bottom Line
Including the right products in our recommended anti-acne skincare routine can help manage acne and keep you feeling your best.
