5 Things You Didn’t Know You MUST Do For Flawless Skin During Quarantine

Well, here we are, it’s almost May and you’ve most likely been either quarantined or sheltering in place for well over a month now with the COVID-19 Pandemic going on around the world. Days are starting to blend together and you most likely aren’t even sure what day of the week it is. I have started to track the days of the week based on which day the new episode of my favorite show airs, and that’s how I know it’s Monday (haha, hopefully, I am not the only one doing this). Even if you live in an area that hasn’t been impacted much by COVID-19, or you are an essential worker so life isn’t much different for you, this blog will still have some benefit for you so keep reading. In a time where normal routines seem to be on pause, I am here to tell you 5 important things you can be adding to your skincare routine to help achieve flawless skin – quarantine style.
- WASH YOUR FACE – TWICE A DAY!
Okay, now I know you know that you need to be washing your face regularly. But in a world where you’re most likely not leaving the house every day or have any of your usual daily social commitments, it may not seem necessary to wash it every morning and night. I mean, I don’t actually remember the last time I wore any makeup – so why would it be still as important to cleanse my face? Well, your face might seem clean from the look of it, but throughout the day and while you sleep your skin is creating oil. Your skin builds up bacteria, pollutants, viruses, dirt, and dead skin throughout the day and washing your face removes these impurities and leaves your skin looking and feeling fresh and clean. Plus, it is the first important step in your skincare routine. You don’t want to be putting your toner, serums, and moisturizers on if your skin isn’t squeaky clean!
- EXFOLIATE
Staying inside more often than before means you’re most likely inside an air-conditioned or heated building. If you already have skin conditions like eczema, rosacea or psoriasis, air-conditioning can make them worse, sending the skin’s natural moisture balance out of whack. Even if you don’t suffer from any of these conditions, air-conditioning can dry out your skin, making your skin itch and flake. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin using a chemical, granular substance, or exfoliation tool. Sometimes, dead cells don’t shed completely. This can result in dry, flaky patches and clogged pores. Exfoliating can help prevent this. Exfoliating is always an important skincare step, and during quarantine, this does not change.
- MOISTURIZE
If you’re like me and find you haven’t been wearing much makeup or even getting ready most days, now is a great time to increase your moisturizing habits – and not just your face. The seasons are changing and my skin always seems to be so much drier during this time, so I have really been focusing on lathering up on my daily moisturizer. But specifically for your face – a great daily moisturizer will work wonders on your skin especially if you are prone to breakouts. Moisturizing your skin is important to help prevent further breakouts. When your skin is dry and irritated, it actually causes breakouts and acne. By moisturizing your skin, you can reduce your chances of any skin problems arising. Facial moisturizers help balance your skin’s complexion and prevent acne breakouts.
- TRY OUT A FACEMASK
You’re probably finding that you have some extra time on your hands during this Pandemic. If that is you, I highly suggest a little TLC. Plan a night to give yourself a facial and pretend you’re at a spa. Try out that facemask you’ve been meaning to use, or try MintPear’s Pumpkin Enzyme Exfoliating Masque (one of my favorites!). Apply your mask, fill up your bubble bath, turn on some relaxing music, and give yourself that much-needed break. We all deserve a little self-love – especially right now.

- CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES
I can’t stress enough the importance of cleaning your makeup brushes regularly. If you haven’t washed your makeup brushes in a while, now is a perfect time! You may have a flawless skincare routine, but then using dirty makeup brushes basically counteracts all of it since you’re essentially rubbing around dirt and oils from dirty bristles. To fight infection and clogged pores I recommend washing concealer and foundation brushes once a week. For brushes you use around your eyes, twice per month, and for any other brushes, once a month is fine.
Here’s how: Put a drop of a mild shampoo into the palm of your hand. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water. Then, massage the bristles into your palm to distribute the shampoo into the brush. Rinse the shampoo out and squeeze out the water with a towel. Lay the brushes on their side with the bristles hanging off the edge of the counter to dry.
