10 Common Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Guilty Of

Most of us have a certain skincare routine that we do every day. Although you are consistent with your routine, you may still be seeing some trouble with acne, dry skin, oily skin, etc and you may not be sure why. Your skincare routine might not even be the culprit for your complexion troubles, you may be guilty of some of these 10 common skincare mistakes.
- NOT CLEANING YOUR PHONE –
Now I know it’s gross, but we are all guilty of it, the bathroom phone scroll… don’t tell me you haven’t done it. Life is busy, whether you’re a mom, working full-time, etc sometimes you find that your time in the bathroom is best for catching up on the news, social media, or sending texts. But, do you remember the last time you cleaned your phone? And even if you wash your hands a million times a day, your phone screen still picks up tons of bacteria. And then you make a phone call and all of that grossness goes right on to your face… It took a minute to get into the habit, but try to wipe your phone down every day with a disinfecting wipe, or even a makeup wipe! Your skin will thank you.
- SLEEPING WITH MAKEUP ON –
It’s easy to get too tired and climb right into bed at night instead of taking your makeup off and consistently sticking to your skincare routine. As hard as it might be to force yourself to stick to it, just know that while leaving makeup on your skin overnight every now and then won’t directly cause wrinkles, it can suck moisture out of your skin, making any lines you have look more prominent by the time the alarm goes off. Now, go wash your face!

- ONLY MOISTURIZING AT NIGHT –
I used to do this ALL the time. Wash my face at night and apply moisturizer, but in the morning wash my face and directly apply makeup. I thought that moisturizing my face in the morning would make my skin appear oily throughout the day or cause my makeup to not apply properly. This is SO wrong. Give yourself a few minutes to let the moisturizer set in before starting your makeup, and you’ll notice a difference I promise. Your makeup will blend and look SO much better on your moisturized skin.
- ONLY WEARING SUNSCREEN IN THE SUMMER –
Wearing sunscreen every day is extremely important. It may be hard to remember in the winter or when the sun is not out, but remember that UV Rays are still out even through the clouds. Apply a light sunscreen before you put on your makeup in the morning. Don’t forget to apply to other areas like your arms, neck, hands, etc. You’ll thank me later!
- FORGETTING TO EXFOLIATE –
Use a gentle exfoliator once a week to rid your skin of dead skin cells and refresh your complexion. MintPear’s Pumpkin Enzyme Exfoliating Masque is a great product to add to your skincare routine for gentle exfoliation. You’ll be amazed by how much your skin changes (for the better) by simply adding in an exfoliating product. But do remember to not over-exfoliate, about once a week should be enough.

- TOUCHING YOUR FACE –
This is so much easier said than done. Try to notice how many times a day your touch your face, you’ll be shocked. A lot of the time I don’t even realize I am doing it, but whenever I do I tell myself to stop. Your hands have excess oils and germs and overall should not touch your face. Especially don’t pick at or pop your blemishes as this will spread bacteria to your skin.
- CHANGING PRODUCTS TOO QUICKLY –
Did you know that changing your skincare products too often can cause breakouts? If you feel the need to try new cleansers or serums, remember to consistently use them for about a month before you decide to try something new. It takes time for your skin to adjust, be patient to see results.
- NOT CLEANSING PROPERLY –
Many people don’t know how to correctly wash their face, and I’ll admit I used to be one of them. Be sure you are using the right cleanser for your skin type. Be sure to look at ingredients in your cleanser to put your skin in optimal condition for overnight renewal. Resist the urge to scrub your face, as this will cause irritation. Use a toner, and finish with your serums and moisturizer.
- USING DIRTY MAKEUP BRUSHES –
You may have a flawless skincare routine, but then using dirty makeup brushes basically counteracts all of it since you’re essentially rubbing around dirt and oils from dirty bristles. To fight infection and clogged pores I recommend washing concealer and foundation brushes once a week. For brushes you use around your eyes, twice per month, and for any other brushes, once a month is fine.

- TAKING TOO HOT SHOWERS –
Not much dries your skin out faster than taking too hot of showers. I know I know a super hot shower feels so good and is so tempting after a long day or on a cold winter morning. Not only will too hot of shower dry out your skin, but it is also very damaging to your hair. Hot showers can strip your skin of essential moisture and healthy oils. Resist the urge and take a warm shower instead.
